What goes in an emergency kit?

The UK Government’s Prepare website encourages every household to keep an emergency kit, built up over time. It recommends food that doesn’t need cooking, and at least three litres of bottled drinking water per person per day, with extra for cooking and washing. Robin Ready turns that advice into a list sized to your household, covering:

Prepare covers England. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own emergency advice too.

    Questions people ask

How much water do we need?

The Government’s Prepare site recommends at least three litres of drinking water per person per day. For two adults over 72 hours, that’s 18 litres. You can choose more on your list if you’d like extra for cooking and washing.

Why do I need a radio if I have a phone?

In a long power cut, your phone’s battery runs down, and mobile signal and internet can drop too. A battery radio keeps you up to date with local news and official updates.

Do I need to buy everything at once?

No. Prepare suggests adding to your kit when you can and building it up over time. Tick off what you already have, and there’s no need to panic-buy.

    Where should I keep it?

Somewhere cool, dry and easy to reach. Keep the grab bag by the front door or in the hall cupboard, and the boxes and water under the stairs or in a cupboard. Lofts get hot and garages can be damp.

How often should I check it?

Every six months is a good habit: check the dates on food and water, test the torch and radio, and charge the power bank. Doing it when the clocks change makes it easy to remember.

What number do I call in a power cut?

Call 105 to report a power cut or get updates. It’s free to call from landlines and mobiles in Great Britain.

    How much does it cost?

If you buy everything on the list, a kit for two adults comes to around £230, and less if you already have some of it. Robin Ready is free to use. We earn a small commission from retailers when you buy, at no extra cost to you, and no one can pay to be on the list.
